The short answer

What changed

Google is bringing ads in AI Mode to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. In the U.S., it's launching multiturn ads, which allow ads in follow-up queries.

Who has it

Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible. The help page lists English as the language, and Pakistan as text ads only.

What I'd do this week

My advice, not Google's: if you target any of these countries, check which match types you run there.

What ads in AI Mode are

AI Mode is the part of Google Search built for "multi-turn conversations and comparisons." When a conversation has commercial relevance, ads can appear within or alongside the AI-generated responses, in sections labeled "Sponsored." Text ads and Shopping ads can show there, and Google says it's experimenting with others, such as local inventory ads and vehicle ads.

What's coming next

Google plans to expand to more locales in Q4 2026, "including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom." The post doesn't give a date for each country.

The post announces multiturn ads in the U.S. and doesn't say when, or whether, they'll reach other countries.

How your campaigns qualify

  • No setup. Google's help page says you don't need new campaigns or separate budgets. Existing campaigns "automatically participate through the Google Ads auction when relevant."
  • Match types matter. AI Max, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max are eligible both for matching to the query and for contextual matching to the query plus the AI response. Exact and phrase match keywords are eligible only when the query expresses "direct commercial intent."
  • No opt-out. You can't target AI Mode on its own or opt out of it separately from Search. Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
  • AI explainers. In some placements, ads may appear with AI explainers: short text generated by Google's Gemini models to explain how an ad relates to what someone is looking for. Advertisers can't manually write, edit, approve or opt out of them.
  • Reporting. Results are "included in aggregate" in your standard campaign reports and the search terms report. The page doesn't describe a separate AI Mode segment.
  • Billing. The same auction and bidding models as standard Search ads apply, and the page says "You aren't charged extra to participate."

What I'd do this week

These are my suggestions, not steps from Google.

  1. Check your country targeting. List which of your campaigns target the 10 new countries, plus Brazil, Mexico and the UK, which are planned for Q4 2026.
  2. Look at match types there. If those campaigns run only exact and phrase match, see "Match types matter" above and decide whether that's the reach you want.
  3. Read the search terms. Watch for longer, question-style queries in those markets and add negatives where they don't fit.
  4. Update your website. Google says AI explainers can use information from your website, so check that your key pages are accurate and current.
  5. Tidy your feed. For Shopping, make sure titles, descriptions, prices and images in Merchant Center match your landing pages.
