Meta lets you set age and gender per ad creative
A new option lets advertisers choose an audience for each ad creative: several ads in one ad set, each with its own age range and gender. Meta launched it Oct 19 for Marketing API partners.

The short answer
What changed
"Choose an audience for each ad creative" lets you create several ads within one ad set and "select the age range and gender each media is best suited for." In the Marketing API it's called creative audience pairing, and it moves age and gender from the ad set to the ad creative. Meta launched it Monday, Oct 19.
Who has it
Marketing API partners, starting Oct 19. The announcement is written for them and doesn't say when, or whether, the toggle shows up in Ads Manager.
What I'd do this week
Advice, not from Meta: if you split ad sets only to give different creatives different ages or genders, pick one of those groups and see whether it fits the rules for a single paired ad set.
How it works
You turn the option on at the ad set, then give each ad a persona: an age range and a gender. A single-media ad carries one persona. A multi-media ad carries one persona per image or video. The API docs are clear that switching it on does nothing by itself: "without a persona there is nothing to pair."
The announcement gives two examples. A financial services advertiser "might decide retirement-planning videos are best suited for people aged 50–65, and savings account videos are best suited for all ages." A fashion retailer might pair images of women's sweaters with women and men's sweaters with men.
The rules for the ad set
The ad set has to stay broad for this to work. With pairing on, the docs list three requirements:
- The ad set's minimum age can only be between 18 and 25.
- The maximum age must be 65.
- Gender has to be all genders. A single-gender ad set isn't allowed.
A persona can't go below the ad set's minimum age, and its top age is 65. You also can't combine pairing with Advantage+ audience or with age and gender suggestions. The API returns an error if you try.
What the pages don't say: whether a persona is a hard limit on who can see that ad or a signal for delivery, and how results are reported by persona.
What I'd do with it
This is my advice, not Meta's.
The obvious use is consolidation. If an account has separate ad sets that exist only because one creative suits older buyers and another suits younger ones, this is a way to put them back in one ad set with one budget. I'd start with one pair of ad sets, not the whole account.
Check the restrictions before you plan around it. If the ad set itself has to start above 25, stop below 65 or target one gender, or you rely on Advantage+ audience, this option is off the table for that ad set.
If you use a tool built on the Marketing API, ask whether and when it will support pairing, since the announcement only covers Marketing API partners.
